"Running On Empty"

by Nancy Sebastian Meyer

…like a tree planted by streams of water… Psalm 1:3

Water is an essential ingredient for wellness. In fact, approximately two thirds of a human body—and up to eighty-five percent of the brain—is water! Yet, as a society, we don’t particularly like to drink water. It’s boring. Today’s refrigerators offer much more interesting beverage options. The question remains: are we taking in enough water to properly hydrate our bodies? Or are we running on empty?

I have run out of gas on only two occasions in my life as a driver. The first time, I was headed home from an evening counseling class that met in Philadelphia. About two-thirds of the way home, I felt the car cough and then slow down. I pressed on the accelerator to no avail as it finally dawned on me I had not recently checked the fuel situation. Rich enjoyed my effusive thanks and hero-worship as he rode to my rescue that evening.

The second time I allowed an empty tank to surprise me was shortly after the first occurrence. I was annoyed with myself for not learning my lesson the first time, and mortified that my soon-to-be-driving daughter witnessed—and enjoyed—my predicament. Although Rich wasn’t home, my retired uncle graciously brought us a container of fuel to help us reach the next gas station. I cleverly made the embarrassing situation into a teachable moment for Becky.

So, how about the fuel that runs our lives? Yes, we need food and water to nourish the body. But let’s not overlook the spiritual feedings that help us grow to be more like our Heavenly Father. As Psalm 1:3 suggests, we need to intentionally plant ourselves in the right place to soak up the living water of God’s Word. We need weekly doses of scripture at a Bible-teaching church and daily watering of the soul during our time alone with God each day.

Are you reading God’s love letter to you and communicating with Him on a regular basis. Nothing else will as effectively cleanse, fill, and prepare you for the Master’s service. I’m praying that you intentionally make time to sit down alone with God today. Praise, thanks, and adoration of our amazing God will most definitely top off your spiritual tank. Then keep it up--so you never again get stranded on a mission because you’ve run dry.
