"By the Light of the Moon"
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer
“…let your light shine before men…” Matthew 5:16
Last night Rich drove us home from one of Becky’s Maryland ice hockey games. The brilliance of the moon rivaled headlights and street lamps. The dazzling light held my attention the whole way home. Pulling into our quiet, dark neighborhood, I realized the full moon provided sufficient light to read by!
A “fingernail moon,” just a sliver, would have emitted significantly less brilliance. I pondered what factors caused the intensity of this moon’s luster. Obviously the position of the moon in relation to the sun decides the radiance of its reflection.
Likewise, I thought, my relationship to God decides how well I reflect His glory. How I position myself in relationship to God directly affects how effectively I illuminate the dark world I live in with His truth.
However, spending all my time with God, yet hiding from the world will not spread His light. Reflection is two-part. I must position myself so I see God, but I must expose myself to the world. What go am I doing if I don’t get out there and shine the light of truth. When I become vulnerable to the world, His glory is best reflected from my life.
How about you? Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world” (John 8:12). Are you reflecting His light—full force—to the world around you? How is your positioning? Are you facing Him, yet also open and vulnerable for the world to see? Is God’s truth, love, hope and grace radiating from you to everyone in your world?
