"Just Like Jesus"
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer
“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.” Psalm 34:13
Becky was probably three or four when Steve Green released a collection of songs setting verses to music to help children memorize God’s Word. Becky quickly learned every song by heart, including a tune for the verse: “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies.”
At a concert in our area, Steve Green came off the platform and into the audience to take requests. After several songs, he spotted little Becky’s raised hand. She quickly scrambled over people to reach the aisle as he got down to her level. When she requested the “Keep Your Tongue” song, he asked if she would sing it for him. She nodded, promptly stuck out her tongue and grabbed hold of it (that’s how the song is sung!) and proceeded to sing.
When Becky reached the end and everyone enthusiastically applauded, she turned back toward our row and Steve began to stand up. Then she hesitated, spun around, and gave him a hug which he warmly returned. The whole touching scene was captured on the huge video screens and a friend later gave us a copy which we treasure.
But the coolest thing in the world happened after Becky crawled back over everyone in our row, slipped into my lap, and buried her face in my shoulder. After a few seconds, she raised her head and whispered in my ear with a sense of awe, “He felt just like Jesus.” Oh, wow!
I am so thankful for that moment when Becky glimpsed what it will be like to reach Heaven and walk into Jesus’ arms. For now, on earth, perhaps it is best for all of us to obediently keep our tongues from evil and our lips from speaking lies so we can fulfill God’s purposes for us here and be ready to meet Him when He comes again.
