"Blessing A Parent's Heart"
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer
“Her children arise and call her blessed….” Proverbs 31:28
I am humbled by the words printed on pages 9 and 10 of Spiritually Single Moms. I treasure the sentiment Becky wrote to the readers of this book, including: “…I honor and respect my mom for the times she fails, asks for forgiveness, and tries again. I love her humble willingness to learn from her mistakes. She is a great example….”
Everyone hopes her child will turn into a respectable adult. We also want our children to look back and someday appreciate our parenting efforts. But we can’t guarantee they will, so logically it is best not to expect their praise. Therefore, when a child does recognize and appreciate our efforts—feeble and faulty as they may be from time to time—the blessing is enormous.
I’ve been pondering the fact that God must experience similar feelings when I—His child—stop and acknowledge His perfect parenting. How often do I take time to appreciate His correction, direction, or teaching? When did I last give thanks for His intervention, provision, or blessing? I wonder how many times this past week I have missed noticing Him at work in my life and the world around me. Just like I wanted to please my parents when I was a child, I want to delight my Heavenly Father with praise and compliments and bring a smile to His face.
I am forever grateful for God’s gift of a believing mother and father who unconditionally loved me and provided an earthly likeness of God the Father. This sketchy but cherished image of God motivates me to rise up and bless His name.
Have you blessed the Father’s heart lately? Join me as I tell Him today how much I love Him and the many reasons why. Let’s make His heart glad!
