"A Beautification Project"
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer
“…He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” Philippians 1:6
Two adjoining properties located on a major road near my home are under major reconstruction. Initially many trees were felled around the stately old houses, and after a week or so of rain, the place looked terrible. I began hearing negative comments and criticism from friends and neighbors. Because I know the property owners quite well, I kept thinking that we should all mind our own business and patiently watch what happens. Since then, buildings have been erected and the landscaping changes more each week. Observers are finally beginning to note the slow but steady progress and acknowledge the resulting majestic beauty.
As I drive past this work-in-progress, I am reminded that we are much the same as those properties. Though other people critique or criticize us, we should continue to trust and obey the One who holds the blueprint for our lives. He has a plan (Jeremiah 29:11) and has promised to “carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6). Some days we might feel more beautiful than others. But what counts is not how we feel or what others may think or say, but that we obediently follow our Savior through the refining process.
I look forward to seeing the final outcome of my friends’ beautification project, just like I can hardly wait to get to Heaven and see how my life has fit into God’s final plan. However, for now, it is best to be patient and take time every day to thank God for new developments along the way. This is hope for the future—and joy for today!
