Blessing A Parent's Heart
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer

“Her children arise and call her blessed….” Proverbs 31:28

I am humbled by the words printed on pages 9 and 10 of Spiritually Single Moms. I treasure the sentiment Becky wrote to the readers of this book, including: “…I honor and respect my mom for the times she fails, asks for forgiveness, and tries again. I love her humble willingness to learn from her mistakes. She is a great example….”

Everyone hopes her child will turn into a respectable adult. We also want our children to look back and someday...

Smile Break

Here's the authentic second-grade answers to the question:
If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be?

1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.

2. I'd make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.

3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Thank God for Mothers!

Most of you probably don’t know my mother. In fact, even if you meet her several times, you might not remember her face. Why? Appearing rather ordinary, she quite happily blends into a crowd. I can’t begin to imagine the challenges she faced trying to understand her outspoken, gregarious, effervescent daughter!

I remember a family vacation where Dad and I went to “arts and crafts” together. Later that day, waiting in the lunch line, someone near us admired our masterpieces. When I told her with pride that art was our hobby, she asked what my mother enjoyed doing. After a moment of pondering my mother’s chief activities, I finally answered, “Cleaning.” Cleaning--what was I thinking?!

To be honest, although Mother is quietly reserved in public, she is the indispensable encourager of our family. It seems to me her hands are always busy helping and her knees are worn out from praying. She listens and hears even the things I don’t say. She is the wind beneath my wings.

If your mother is still living—or perhaps there is a mother-figure in your life—take time to thank her for the good things in your relationship.

Happy Mother’s Day,

Nancy

P.S. Mom — I love you!

Ten Ways To Communicate
Love to Mom

Speak E-Z Tips & Ideas

Think of your mother in terms of Philippians 4:8 and reflect on any aspects of her life that are true, noble, righteous, pure, and lovely, as well as admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. Here are ten ways to express your gratitude, respect and love. Try out one or more of these ideas this coming Sunday—or any day of the year!

  1. Give her a hug, hold on and whisper in her ear how special she is to you.
  2. Wire her a bouquet of flowers with a personal message on the small accompanying card.
  3. Spend time together looking at old photographs and sharing good memories.
  4. Take her out for coffee and ask her about her hopes and dreams, what she’s accomplished and what she’s still looking forward to doing.
  5. Take her on...[read more]

Ask Nancy...

Question:  Isn’t it hypocritical to compliment my mother when she actually did a very poor job of mothering then and now?
Answer:  Being thankful is commanded by God and should result in our obedience. When Becky reluctantly cleans her room because I laid down the law, she is not so much a hypocrite as she is obedient. Here’s a thought that will encourage you: if God commands it, He always provides a way to accomplish it! Ask Him to reveal something praiseworthy about your mother.

Worth Your Time — A Word to Mothers

(This excerpt comes from Nancy’s book, Spiritually Single Moms: Raising Godly Kids When Dad Doesn’t Believe.)

Each precious child belongs to God. Although God gifted you with the honor of being a child’s mother, the child is not yours. God entrusted this child to you for his or her formative years. Enjoy and treasure the years you have together, but be mindful that the child is not your treasure—he or she is simply on loan.

And do your task of mothering to the glory of God. Then, one day in the not-so-distant future, you will hear God say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:21). For now, God is whispering:

“My dear child, although it defies your comprehension, I love your children infinitely more than you do. And I promise, throughout their lives on earth, I will woo them with my Shepherd’s heart. Trust me. Rest in me. Glorify me. I have created you and each of your children, and I have placed these children in your home because you are the perfect mother for these children. No, dear one, you are not perfect but have been perfectly chosen to be the mother of these little ones I love. Stay confident in your faith, and persevere, for in just a very little while I will come, and say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’ I give you my unending love and all the provisions you need.”
