Running On Empty
by Nancy Sebastian Meyer

…like a tree planted by streams of water… Psalm 1:3

Water is an essential ingredient for wellness. In fact, approximately two thirds of a human body—and up to eighty-five percent of the brain—is water! Yet, as a society, we don’t particularly like to drink water. It’s boring. Today’s refrigerators offer much more interesting beverage options. The question remains: are we taking in enough water to properly hydrate our bodies? Or are we running on empty?

I have run out of gas on only two occasions in my life as a driver. The first time, I was headed home from an evening counseling class that met in Philadelphia. About two-thirds of the way home, I felt the car cough and then slow down. I pressed on the accelerator to no avail as it finally dawned on me I had not recently checked the fuel situation. Rich enjoyed my effusive thanks and hero-worship as he rode to my rescue that evening.

The second time I allowed an empty tank to surprise me was shortly after the first occurrence. I was annoyed with myself for not learning my lesson the first time, and mortified that my soon-to-be-driving daughter witnessed—and enjoyed—my predicament. Although Rich wasn’t...[read more]

A Valuable Source of Fuel

Is the cost of gas taking the fun out of your summer plans? I'm letting God teach me how to make the most of what I've been given. It's amazing to see what His perspective through these times are like.

Here are five ways to find something good in a seemingly negative situation.

  1. Take the train or bus and have a seat beside someone who needs to hear about Jesus.
  2. Share the love of Jesus—and a ride—with a co-worker who lives near you.
  3. Grow your brain—strengthen your logical/mathematical intelligence by efficiently routing your errand trips.
  4. Stay home and have some old-fashioned fun with your family by reading aloud, singing songs, and playing games.
  5. Explore your own community and find reasons to thank the Lord for the town in which you live.

This list just gets you started. Come up with a few of your own ideas. Turn negative situations into opportunities to practice 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, which says, Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances…. Great will be your reward!

How about you? What struggles and frustrations are you facing right now? Life lessons, purifying principles, and transforming truth in the pages of the Bible can give you stamina to tackle whatever twists and turns, bumps and potholes challenge your progress down the road of life.

While gas for our cars gets more expensive, we need to remind ourselves of the eternal reality that spiritual fuel is priceless, bought with the precious blood of Jesus. Are you filling your spiritual gas tank on a regular basis? Rest in God. Rejuvenate yourself in His Word. Refresh your joy by praising Him with your whole heart.

Filled to overflowing,

Nancy

Caring for Your Voice, Part 1 of 4

Speak E-Z Tips & Ideas

Do you know what goes on under the hood of your car? Or, like me, do you know only as much as where to find the owner’s manual when you need to change the clock or figure out what a particular warning light means?

Unfortunately, most people treat their voice the same way. They have no clue how the body produces sound, and they don’t care--until something goes wrong.

For leaders in particular, the voice is a precious asset. In the next few Speak E-Z articles, I want to share some of the valuable vocal truths I’ve picked up over the past thirty years of study. Oh, and don’t be surprised when they correlate with life lessons!

In keeping with the car metaphor, think about...[read more]

Smile Break

Here’s a joke to drive you crazy—no laughing gas needed!

An elderly woman patiently waited in her car while another driver vacated the parking place she had her eye on. Just as she was ready to pull in, a shiny sports car zoomed into the space ahead of her. Putting her window down, she indignantly yelled at the young man climbing out of his car, “Do you realize you took my spot?”

He replied with a shrug, “Lady, that’s what happens when you’re young and fast.” He had no more than turned on his heel when he heard a terrible crash. Looking back in horror to see his sports car being rammed by the woman’s sedan, he cried, “Do you realize what you’re doing?”

She retorted, “Sonny, that’s what happens when you’re old and rich.”
